How to Get Your Brand Cited in AI Search Results Without Running a Single Ad

How to Get Your Brand Cited in AI Search Results Without Running a Single Ad

You cannot buy your way into a Perplexity recommendation. There is no ad format that puts your brand into a ChatGPT answer. AI engines do not take sponsorships they take sources. And that fundamentally changes what 'getting your brand out there' means in 2026.

Why AI Search Is Different From Google Search

On Google, you can pay to appear at the top of the search results page. On Perplexity, ChatGPT, or Google AI Overview, there is no paid placement. The AI engine reads the web, finds the most credible, specific, structured information it can on a topic, and synthesises an answer from those sources.

This means brand visibility in AI search is entirely earned. The brands that appear in AI answers are the ones that have the most credible, most specific, most well-structured content on the topics their buyers are asking about. The brands that do not appear are the ones whose content is either generic, locked behind paywalls, or written in marketing language that AI engines cannot extract facts from.

This is both a threat and a huge opportunity for Indian D2C brands. The threat: if you have been relying on paid search for visibility, AI search gives you none of that leverage. The opportunity: if you can build genuinely credible, specific content, you can appear in AI answers for free and those recommendations carry more trust than any ad.

The Three Things AI Engines Look For When Deciding Who to Cite

Source credibility. AI engines weight sources from established publications Economic Times, YourStory, Healthline India, Inc42 far more heavily than brand-owned content. A mention of your product in one of these publications is worth more for AI visibility than 50 product page updates.

Content specificity. Generic claims are invisible to AI engines. 'This is a great protein powder' will never be cited. '27 grams of whey isolate per serving, tested for heavy metals by an ISO 17025 accredited lab' is the kind of specific, verifiable claim that AI engines extract and cite.

Structural clarity. AI engines extract content that is easy to parse FAQ format, numbered lists, clearly labelled sections. A product page that reads like one long marketing paragraph is hard for an AI engine to extract a specific answer from. A product page with a clear 'Key Ingredients' section, a 'Who It's For' section, and a 'Common Questions' section is much easier.

The Five Things to Do This Month

Rewrite your top five product pages to lead with specific, verifiable claims in the first 150 words. Remove all marketing superlatives from these sections.

Get one detailed feature in a credible Indian publication YourStory, Inc42, or a category-specific media outlet.

Add a FAQ section to every product page with 5 to 8 questions written in the language your customers actually use. Build a structured 'About' or 'What We Make' page that describes your brand, products, and differentiators in factual, non-marketing language. Ensure your product pages have complete Product and FAQ schema markup.

None of these actions require a budget. They require time, clarity, and a willingness to write like a source instead of like an advertiser.

How Noma Helps

Noma tracks your brand's visibility across Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Overview every week showing you which queries you appear in, which you are missing, and specifically what content changes would move your score. For D2C brands starting to invest in AI search visibility, Noma provides the measurement layer that tells you whether your content changes are actually working.

You cannot buy a spot in an AI answer. You can only earn it. For the first time in years, that makes content quality the most valuable marketing asset a brand can build.
