Common questions

How is engagement rate calculated?

Average likes plus average comments, divided by follower count, expressed as a percentage. So a creator with 20,000 followers averaging 900 likes and 100 comments has an engagement rate of 5%. Take the average across the last six to nine posts rather than a single one — a single viral post will flatter a creator whose normal posts do nothing, and one flop will unfairly punish a consistent creator.

What is a good engagement rate?

It depends entirely on size, which is why a single threshold like "3% is good" misleads at both ends. The India 2026 bands this tool scores against are: Nano (1K–10K) 5–8%, Micro (10K–100K) 3–5%, Mid-tier (100K–500K) 2–3%, Macro (500K–1M) 1.5–2%, and Mega (1M+) 1–1.5%. A 2% rate is poor for a nano creator and excellent for a mega one.

Why does engagement rate fall as follower count rises?

Two reasons, and both are structural rather than a sign of decline. Larger audiences are less tightly matched to the creator — people follow a big account casually in a way they do not follow a small one. And the feed algorithm shows any given post to a shrinking share of a large following. A creator losing engagement as they grow is normal; a creator whose engagement collapses while their follower count climbs is the pattern worth investigating.

What do the verdicts mean?

They position a rate inside its own tier band. Excellent means at or above the top of the band. Good is at or above the midpoint. Average is inside the band. Below Average is under the band but at least half of its floor. Poor is anything lower. The label is relative to the creator's tier every time, never to a fixed number.

Should saves and shares count toward engagement?

Ideally yes, and they often matter more than likes — a save is a much stronger purchase signal. They are not in this calculation because saves and shares are only visible in a creator's own Instagram Insights, not from outside the account. If a creator will share their insights, add saves and shares to the numerator and treat the result as a fuller picture than any public tool can produce.

Can engagement rate be faked?

Yes, and it is the most commonly bought metric in influencer marketing. Engagement pods, comment bots and purchased likes all inflate it. The signals worth checking are whether comments are generic ("Nice!", emoji only) or specific to the post, whether engagement is suspiciously consistent across every post, and whether likes vastly outnumber comments. A high engagement rate with no real conversation underneath it is a warning, not a recommendation.

Is a high engagement rate enough to pick a creator?

No. Engagement measures attention, not intent to buy. A meme account can post 12% engagement and sell nothing, because the audience came for entertainment and has no relationship with any brand it sees. Audience relevance, past brand-collaboration performance and the fit between the product and what people actually follow the creator for matter more. Use engagement rate to disqualify, not to select.

How does this differ from the Fake Follower Estimator?

This tool tells you how engaged an audience is. The Fake Follower Estimator tells you whether that audience is real, by comparing the same engagement signal against what the follower count should produce and weighing several supporting signals. Run this one first for a quick read, and the estimator before any money changes hands.
