Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator

Instagram engagement rate is likes plus comments, divided by followers, times 100. An account with 48,000 followers averaging 2,500 likes and 140 comments scores 5.5%. If you can see Insights, add saves and shares and divide by reach instead: that shows how many people who saw a post acted on it.

Formula

By followers = (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100 · By reach = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ reach × 100

Worked example

(2,500 + 140) ÷ 48,000 × 100 = 5.5% · (2,500 + 140 + 180 + 60) ÷ 21,000 × 100 = 13.7%

Verdict

5.5% is good for a 10K–100K account (indicative range 3–7%). By reach has no shared benchmark: compare a creator with their own posts.

Common questions

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Add the average likes and comments on a creator’s recent posts, divide by their follower count and multiply by 100. 2,500 likes and 140 comments on 48,000 followers is 5.5%. Average the last nine to twelve feed posts, not one, so a single viral post or a flop does not skew the number.

Should I use engagement rate by followers or by reach?

Use by followers when you are vetting a creator from the outside: it only needs public numbers, and it is what most published benchmarks use. Use by reach when the creator shares Insights. It divides likes, comments, saves and shares by the accounts a post actually reached, so it shows how well the content works on people who saw it, regardless of follower count.

Where do I find reach, saves and shares on Instagram?

Only the account owner can see them. In the Instagram app, open a post and tap View insights: it lists accounts reached, likes, comments, shares and saves. For a creator you are considering, ask for screenshots of Insights for their last few posts. A creator who will not share them is worth noting.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

It depends on account size, and published benchmarks conflict widely, so treat any band as indicative. This calculator uses one source, the Hubfluence Influencer Marketing Report 2026, for engagement by followers: Nano (1K–10K) 8–12%, Micro (10K–100K) 3–7%, Mid-tier (100K–500K) 2–5%, Macro (500K–1M) 1–3% and Mega (1M+) 0.5–2%. Compare creators of the same size in the same niche.

Do Reels, carousels and single images engage differently?

They are counted differently, so compare like with like. Reels reach many people who do not follow the account, which changes what engagement by followers means for them. Average one format at a time, and when you compare two creators, use the same format for both.

Why are saves and shares worth adding?

They are stronger signals than a like. A save means someone wants to come back to the post, and a share means they put it in front of someone else. Neither is visible from outside the account, which is why public calculators leave them out and why this one asks for them from Insights.

Can Instagram engagement be faked?

Yes. Engagement pods, comment bots and bought likes all inflate it. Warning signs are generic comments (emoji only, "Nice!"), engagement that is the same on every post, and likes that vastly outnumber comments. Run the Fake Follower Checker before paying a creator whose numbers look too good.

How is this different from the general engagement rate calculator?

The general calculator works for any platform and uses only public numbers: likes, comments and followers. This one is for Instagram. It adds what Instagram Insights shows (saves, shares and reach) and returns engagement by reach next to engagement by followers.
