Common questions

What counts as a fake follower on Instagram?

Three different things usually get lumped together. Purchased bot accounts, which exist only to inflate a number. Inactive accounts, which were real people who stopped using Instagram. And mass-followers or follow-for-follow accounts, which are real but will never see or act on a brand post. All three inflate a follower count without adding reach, which is why paying on follower count alone overpays.

How does this estimator work?

It compares a creator’s actual engagement rate against what is normal for their follower tier in India in 2026, then weighs four supporting signals: the follower-to-following ratio, the balance of likes to comments, how consistent engagement is across recent posts, and basic account signals like verification and post count. Those combine into a 0-100 authenticity score, and the estimated suspicious percentage is derived from it. Every signal and its weight is shown under "How this score was calculated" so you can see what drove the number.

Is it actually free?

Yes. No signup, no card, no trial that expires. There is a fair-use limit of ten handle checks per hour per person so the tool stays available for everyone, and manual estimates are unlimited.

How accurate is it?

It is an estimate, and the name is deliberate. This reads public engagement patterns — it never sees the follower list, so it cannot tell you which specific accounts are fake. What it does reliably is flag the gap between a follower count and the engagement that count should produce, which is the single most useful signal available without account access. Treat a low score as a reason to look harder, not as proof.

Why does a celebrity get a good score with 0.15% engagement?

Because engagement rate falls as an account grows, and a flat threshold misreads both ends of the scale. A nano creator with 6% engagement is normal; a 100M+ account with 6% would be extraordinary and probably bought. We score against tier-specific bands — 4-8% for nano, down to 0.05-0.2% for a global icon — so a celebrity is not punished for being a celebrity, and a small account is not flattered for being small.

What engagement benchmarks do you use?

India 2026 bands by follower tier: Nano (under 5K) 4-8%, Micro (5-25K) 2.5-5%, Mid-tier (25-100K) 1.5-3%, Macro (100-500K) 1-2%, Mega (500K-1M) 0.5-1.5%, Top Creator (1-10M) 0.3-1%, Celebrity (10-100M) 0.1-0.5%, Global Icon (100M+) 0.05-0.2%. Engagement rate is calculated as average likes plus average comments, divided by followers.

Should I refuse to work with a creator who scores badly?

Not automatically. A weak score means the audience is smaller than the follower count suggests, which is a pricing problem before it is a disqualification. Negotiate against estimated real reach rather than the headline number, ask for recent story view screenshots, and read the comments on the last few posts. A creator with 40,000 engaged followers can outperform one with 400,000 inactive ones.

What is TruAI and how is it different from this tool?

This estimator infers audience quality from public engagement. TruAI, inside the free Nia app, analyses the actual follower list profile by profile and is calibrated specifically for Indian accounts, where fake-follower patterns differ from global averages. This page tells you whether a creator is worth a closer look. TruAI is the closer look.

Can I check a private account?

Partially. A private account still exposes follower and following counts, but not post engagement, which is the strongest signal available. The result will be marked as a low-confidence read. For a private creator you are seriously considering, ask them to share their own insights — any creator working with brands should be willing to.

How often should I re-check a creator?

Before any new campaign, and certainly before renewing. Follower quality moves: accounts get purged by Instagram, creators occasionally buy a boost before a pitch, and engagement decays as an audience ages. A check from six months ago tells you about a creator who no longer exists.
