Get Your D2C Product Cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity
FAQ schema helps AI engines extract and cite your product pages. Here is exactly how to structure FAQ content to get cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity.

FAQ sections on product pages serve two different masters. Structured FAQ schema with JSON-LD markup helps Google. But the FAQ content that gets extracted by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview follows different rules from what ranks in traditional Google FAQ schema. Here is how to write for both.

What AI Engines Look For
Three Criteria for Extractable FAQ Content
1. The question must match a real query pattern buyers use. Not a marketing question you invented to show your product favourably.
Extractable: "Does Product X actually reduce dark spots?"
Not extractable: "Why is Product X the best choice for you?"
2. The answer must be specific, factual, and self-contained. An AI engine needs to extract the answer and use it standalone without surrounding page context.
Not extractable: "It works by using our proprietary formula."
Extractable: "It works by delivering 5% niacinamide to the upper dermis, reducing melanin transfer to skin cells within 6 to 8 weeks of consistent use."
3. The answer should include a credibility signal the AI can use to evaluate accuracy — a clinical reference, a regulatory approval, a specific study, or a third-party testing result. Answers without any credibility signal are extracted less frequently.
The Format That Works
How to Structure Each FAQ Item
Element | Wrong Version | Right Version |
|---|---|---|
Question format | "When do our customers see results from our serum?" | "How long does it take to see results from [Product Name]?" |
Sentence 1 — Direct answer | "Results vary by skin type and consistency." | "Most users notice visible results in 4 to 6 weeks of daily use." |
Sentence 2 — Mechanism | "Our formula is specially designed to work for your skin." | "This is because niacinamide requires consistent application to reduce melanin transfer progressively." |
Sentence 3 — Credibility signal | Absent | "In a 12-week study with 84 participants, 78% reported visible improvement in dark spot intensity by week 8." |
Number of FAQ items: 5 to 8 questions per product page. Below 5 gives AI engines limited extract options. Above 10 risks diluting quality 6 excellent extractable answers outperform 12 average ones.
The Technical Implementation

JSON-LD FAQ Schema — What to Add and What to Expect
Add FAQ schema to your product page HTML in a script tag with type application/ld+json. The structure is FAQPage type with mainEntity array containing Question items, each with acceptedAnswer containing text.
A note on Google FAQ Rich Results: Google restricted FAQ rich results to government and health sites in most categories as of late 2025. The markup still helps AI Overview extraction and improves page clarit do not skip it, but do not expect FAQ panels to appear in Google results for most D2C product categories.
For implementation, use Google's Rich Results Test to confirm your markup is parsed correctly before and after publishing.
Prioritising Which FAQs to Write First
The Question Identification Framework
Writing FAQ content without knowing which questions buyers are actually asking in AI engines is guesswork. Here is how to identify which questions to answer with high accuracy.
Source 1 — Your customer support tickets and WhatsApp queries. Every question your customer support team receives is a question your buyers are also asking Perplexity. Sort the last 100 support tickets by topic. The top 10 topic clusters are your highest-priority FAQ questions. They represent real buyer uncertainty that if addressed pre-purchase, may convert hesitant buyers and reduce post-purchase dissatisfaction.
Source 2 — Competitor product page FAQ sections. Open the product pages of your 3 top competitors. Read their FAQ sections. Any question they answer that you do not have an equivalent answer for on your page is a gap. Do not copy their answers — write a better, more specific, more evidence-backed version.
Source 3 — Google's People Also Ask for your category queries. Search your primary product category query on Google. Expand the People Also Ask section and note every question that appears. These are questions real buyers are asking Google and a meaningful subset of the same buyers are asking the same questions on Perplexity and ChatGPT. Answering these questions on your product pages addresses both SEO and AEO simultaneously.
Source 4 — Reddit threads in your category. Search Reddit for your product category. Read the top comment threads where buyers are asking for recommendations. The repeated questions across multiple threads are the questions buyers are using A
I engines to answer. Write FAQ entries for the top 10 most recurring questions.
"FAQ content for AI engines is not about answering what you want them to ask. It is about answering what your buyers are actually typing into ChatGPT at 11pm when they are deciding whether to trust your product."
