AI Search Share of Voice for D2C Brands
Learn how to measure your brand's share of voice in AI search across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and how to read the results by category.

Share of Voice in AI search tells you the answer to the question most D2C marketing teams cannot answer: of all the times AI engines recommend products in my category, how often is my brand in the room? Here is a practical way to measure it.
The Formula

How to Calculate AI Search SOV
AI Search Share of Voice = (your brand's total citations across your tracked query set) ÷ (total brand citations across all brands for the same query set) × 100.
Define your query set first 25 to 40 queries spanning direct category queries, problem queries, and comparison queries. Run each query across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overview four engines, four data points per query. Record every brand cited per response.
Run weekly. A single week's SOV is a snapshot. Four weeks of SOV tells you whether you are gaining or losing ground and to whom.
Category Dynamics
How AI Search SOV Behaves by Category
We are not publishing numeric SOV benchmarks here: concentration varies by market and by query set, so the most useful baseline is your own first four weeks of data. What does hold across categories is the shape of the competition:
Beauty and skincare: a handful of top brands usually hold most citations. Competitive, but accessible with PR and FAQ investment.
Nutraceuticals: typically the most concentrated. Credibility signals such as clinical data and certifications take the longest to build, so expect slow early gains.
Home and lifestyle: usually fragmented, with no dominant brand. Often the fastest category in which to gain competitive SOV.
Fashion: highly volatile. AI engines are less confident in fashion recommendations, so SOV cycles frequently and is hard to sustain.
Citation Type Matters More Than Raw SOV
Break Your SOV Into Three Buckets
A brand mentioned as "the most trusted option" in 8 of 40 queries has higher strategic value than a brand mentioned as "a budget option if you cannot afford better" in 15 of 40 queries. Raw SOV misses this distinction entirely.
Positive citations: AI engine recommends or endorses your brand with a specific positive attribute
Neutral citations: AI engine mentions alongside alternatives without preference awareness value only
Qualified citations: AI engine mentions with a caveat "budget-only," "not for sensitive skin," "limited options"
Track all three. A rising positive SOV with falling qualified SOV is the clearest signal that your GEO investment is working. Noma asks your prompt set daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude on every plan (13 AI engines in total, the rest as add-ons) and records the page behind each citation, so the breakdown takes minutes rather than an afternoon.
Running SOV Tracking Without Noma

The Manual SOV Tracking Method
If you are not yet using Noma to automate this, the manual version is still worth running even imperfectly because directional SOV data is more useful than no data.
Week 1 setup: define your 20-query set. Distribute across direct queries, problem queries, and comparison queries. Create a Google Sheet with columns: query, engine, brands cited, your brand cited Y/N, citation type.
Weekly run: allocate 90 minutes. One team member runs all 20 queries across Perplexity and ChatGPT (the two highest-retrieval engines for most D2C categories). Record every brand cited in each response. Tally at the end of each session.
Monthly review: add up your citation count divided by total brand citations. That is your SOV. Compare month over month. Any significant movement up or down by more than 5 percentage points is worth investigating for its source. Rising SOV with a new editorial mention suggests the mention is being indexed and cited. Falling SOV with a new competitor entry suggests they have already built the content infrastructure to take citations from you.
The manual approach has its limits it does not capture citation sentiment, citation position, or engine-by-engine breakdowns reliably. But it costs nothing and produces directional data that most D2C brands currently have no version of.
"Share of Voice in AI search is not the percentage of ads you bought. It is the percentage of AI recommendations that name you. One you control. The other you earn."
