Second-Party Data: What Indian D2C Brands Miss

Second-Party Data: What Indian D2C Brands Miss

Second-party data is a creator’s own first-party audience data, shared with you directly: segment breakdowns, story completion rates, and save and share behaviour that no attribution tool can see from outside the account. Ask for it in the contract, because most Indian D2C brands never think to.

First-party data is what you collect from your own store. Third-party data is what you buy from data providers. Second-party data from creators is someone else's first-party data, shared with you directly and it is the measurement layer most Indian D2C brands have never accessed.

Second-Party Data: What Indian D2C Brands Miss

What It Is

What Second-Party Creator Data Looks Like

When a creator runs a campaign for your brand, they generate first-party data on their end:

  • Which audience segments engaged with the branded post

  • How engagement differed across age groups and geographies

  • Story completion rate for your brand's content vs their organic content

  • Click-through rate on your product link vs their average link performance

This data lives in the creator's Instagram Insights, YouTube Analytics, or TikTok Creator Marketplace. When they share it with you, it becomes second-party data it tells you about your potential customers as seen through the creator's audience lens.

Most Indian D2C brands receive campaign reports from creators that include reach, impressions, and a screenshot of story views. This is the surface-level summary of available data, not the data itself.

Three Types Worth Requesting

What to Ask For — and Why

Audience overlap data: What percentage of the creator's audience has engaged with content in your product category from other creators? This tells you how saturated your target audience is with competitor content before you run a campaign.

Post-click audience profile: Instagram and YouTube both provide demographic breakdowns of the audience that clicked through to an external link. This is a buyer-intent signal the sub-audience who showed enough interest to click to your product page. This profile often differs meaningfully from the creator's overall audience.

Story retention by audience segment: The drop-off rate at each frame tells you how long different audience segments stayed engaged. If your product's specific claim appears in frame 4 but 60% of the audience drops off by frame 3, your key message is not reaching most viewers.

How to Get It

Include This in Every Creator Brief

Add a data-sharing clause to your creator brief and agreement. Specify exactly what is required within 7 days of campaign completion:

  • Instagram Insights at post level reach, impressions, reach demographic breakdown, profile visits, link clicks

  • Story level reach, completion rate, link clicks, exits per story frame

This is not a significant ask for creators running professional campaigns. Most will comply readily if it is specified in the brief before they agree. The brands that do not get this data are the ones who never asked for it.

What to Do With Second-Party Data

Three Decisions It Makes Possible

Second-party data from creator campaigns makes three decisions materially better when you have it versus when you do not.

Creator renewal decisions: A creator with a 4.1% engagement rate whose post-click audience skews 78% toward your target demographic is a better renewal investment than one with 6.8% engagement whose clickers are outside your buyer profile. Second-party audience data makes this comparison possible.

Brief and creative optimisation: Story frame-by-frame retention data tells you at which point in your product story the audience disengages. If 70% of viewers drop off at the frame where ingredient credentials are discussed, that is a message design failure, not a creator failure. Fix the brief, not the creator lineup.

Lookalike audience building: When a creator shares the demographic breakdown of buyers who clicked through to your product page, that is a seed audience for Meta Custom Audiences a far higher-intent seed than your full site visitor list. Upload it, build a lookalike, and let Meta find buyers who look like people who actively clicked through a creator's product recommendation.

"The data you get from a creator campaign is determined by what you ask for before the campaign starts. Ask for more than a screenshot."
